Cool spots to Celebrate the 4th of July in Westchester

Peekskill fireworks

Peekskill fireworks at the Riverfront

The past two years I have celebrated the 4th of July at the Peekskill Riverfront and had a blast with friends and friends of friends. Several of us got there a bit early to secure a spot near the river for perfect viewing and a breeze to take the edge off the heat. Last year’s evening was hastily put together with emails, texts, and who is bringing what….you should have seen the spread of culinary delights! Some cleverly took the train from Croton, and others, like me, drove, either way whoever got there first staked out the spot for all. The kids all hung out together and scattered about until sundown, the adults ate, drank (ahhh white sangria!) and chatted away. Good times.

This year, the Peekskill Riverfront celebration is on Monday the 4th at dusk. Take a look at other happenings going on in the area.

Bear Mountain starts it all off this weekend, Friday the 24th at 9pm.

Hudson Valley “Experience” Expo Review

OK OK, I’m E X P E R I E N C E D, and I am so pleased to share my day at the expo the Hudson Valley Gateway Chamber of Commerce created, The Hudson Valley “Experience” was March 19, 2011, a business to consumer event at the Colonial Terrace, for residents to experience many of the Hudson Valley businesses, artists and nonprofit organizations in and around the surrounding areas of the lower Hudson Valley, and the river towns.

I must say it really was “happening”! We had approx 95 vendors, ranging from local restaurants, such as Croton on Hudson’s UMAMI, Cortlandt Manor’s THE WOODS AT HOLLOW BROOK, Peekskill’s most awesome 12 Grapes, Division Street Café, Panera Breads, Kathleen’ Tea Room, and many more food establishments, to home improvement companies, and a really informative bed bug demo/informative talk by Garrie Pest Control. Other highlights was a compost demo by Pamela Davis from Cornell Cooperative Extension, and Peekskill local artist Jeorjia Shea, Go NO Sen Karate demo was fun to watch, and the beer sampling table by Bertoline and Sons was quite busy!

What a great way to spend a Saturday, meeting up with friends and other business’s here in the lower Hudson Valley. I was able to meet Bob Yedowitz the gardening guru, and Susan Jacobson from the Lincoln Depot Museum, and Liz Giegerich from thePeekskill Patch, (we follow each other on Twitter, and it always fun to meet up with other folks who have a passion for social media, and Peekskill, too!). Fun and games for the kids, my daughter had a blast! All that extra gold? Guests brought in their gold to Arthur Weeks & Son who paid out cash.

This was the Chambers first “Experience” expo, and being involved with the HVGCC and personally being actively involved in the coming together of this day was energizing as it was a total success! Guests walked away with bags of goodies, delish food samples, gift certificates for many businesses and purchased one of a kind art, and services. The ability to meet local businesses and organizations involved brought a nice connection to it all. Here and there, I walked around and ran into Chris Marra from the Peekskill BID and Economic Business Development, Hilltop Hanover Farms, WHUD, Teatown, and Croton’s new business, Feed the Birds, be sure to go and check them out!.

The lower Hudson Valley is abuzz with arts, culinary delights and businesses; Kudos to the HVGCC for bringing this all together under one roof for the opportunity of business owners and local consumers to make face time with each other. If we want our communities to grow and expand, we must support them; get out there stroll around your village and visit other surrounding areas and see what they have to offer, you might be pleasantly surprised.

RE Market Update-Croton on Hudson Nov.2010

December Happenings in Croton on Hudson

There is much going on in Croton the next several weeks, please take a read and remember to get out there and support our local businesses, by doing so you are supporting and strengthening our community.

By us all supporting our neighbors and their local based businesses (whether storefront or home based) it is a win win scenario: making the effort to shop locally impacts us all by so many things…the jobs they create, raising home values, attracting outside shoppers to venture here thereby assisting us all to have a strong and thriving community, linked to and by the businesses here. More and more we are forced to shop chain and clone stores ( insert choking sound), it makes it difficult for independent small businesses to stay open if they are not getting the patronage of the residents, and, you, the buyer gets to buy free trade and unique items with the added benefit of saving on gas and time.

Croton Landing 9/11 Memorial Site

Croton on Hudson, NY: Croton Landing, a beautiful riverfront park, has been selected as the memorial site to honor four local residents who died on 9/11, emergency responders, and the many impacted by this day. Croton Landing is a beautiful and tranquil location right on the Hudson River, on a clear day you can see the Manhattan skyline, I see it as a perfect spot for such a significant memorial.
The committee who is bringing this about are Linda D. Puglisi, Supervisor of the Town of Cortlandt, Sean Murray, Mayor of the Village of Buchanan, Leo A. Wiegman, Mayor of the Village of Croton-on-Hudson, Abraham J. Zambrano, Manager of the Village of Croton-on-Hudson, Janet M. Mainiero, Project Director and Croton resident.

Two steel girders from the World trade center have been approved and will be part of the design. The Port of Authority of NY and NJ, which owns the steel has been filling requests for these artifacts, there are about 1800 to 2,000. The agency requires a detailed description in each request of how the steel will be displayed. Individuals cannot receive artifacts, only cities or organizations. The requests that are pending supplied detailed specifications for the pieces they want.

The Village in collaboration with the Town Of Cortlandt, are seeking volunteers who have expertise in design, architecture, landscaping and fund raising, what a great way to give back to your community and honor those who passed on this tragic day.
